Archery season

Archery Season Near Taunton Runs October 5 Through November 28

During the 2026 archery season, October 5 through November 28, Taunton hunters use the deer processing referral once a deer is tagged and the harvest report is finished. This line connects you with a trusted processing shop in the region. The processor sets the price. Sundays that fall inside the season are closed. The center of Taunton sits in Wildlife Management Zone 11, so a city buck and a deer from the Raynham side of the swamp often share the same zone conversation.

Where a Taunton Game Meats call ends

Start at (774) 961-6898. Telnyx moves that Taunton, Berkley, Dighton, Assonet, or Somerset call to the hub (508) 738-3388. Jane answers there, takes your details, and connects you directly with a trusted processor in the area. Nothing on this site is a Taunton street address for the shop.

Open days and closed Sundays

Archery in 2026 opens on October 5 and runs through November 28. Sunday hunting is prohibited, so every Sunday inside that span is closed even when the rut is active along the Taunton River or the leaves are down in Hockomock Swamp WMA. Hunt Monday through Saturday, and place the processor call on a day the season is actually open. A closed Sunday is not a travel day for a deer that still needs a report.

The youth deer hunt sits just before the opener, on October 2 and October 3. A family that fills a tag that weekend is already on the reporting clock before most archery hunters have climbed a stand. The paraplegic hunt is October 29 through October 31, inside the archery window, so those three days can add deer to the same referral line. Shotgun and primitive firearms come later. This note stays with the bow weeks.

Where the stands and the trucks are

The state zone map places the center of Taunton in Wildlife Management Zone 11. Raynham hunters often name Route 24, Route 138, or the five-vehicle dirt lot off Prospect Hill Street at Hockomock Swamp WMA. That lot is small. On a November Saturday it holds the trucks that arrived in the dark, and a field-dressed deer still has to reach one of them. Erwin S. Wilder WMA sits against that swamp country, so a drag that starts in Wilder can end at a short dirt parking area rather than a wide paved pull-off.

Berkley hunters come off their side of the Taunton River. Dighton follows Route 138 beside the river, and a deer from that bank still needs a Massachusetts tag. Freetown and the village of Assonet sit farther down Route 24. Somerset callers use Route 138 from the south side of the river. Route 140 is the other paved name Taunton hunters use when they describe which side of the city they are leaving. Those roads tell intake where the deer came from. They are not a processor and they are not a street address for a drop-off.

Why later archery weeks fill the phone

Early October can be quieter than the second half of November. The rut pulls more hunters into the woods, the legal days are still Monday through Saturday, and a trusted processing shop in the region hears from more Zone 11 camps in the same week. This line connects you. It does not reserve a hook with your name on it. The processor sets the price, and the processor decides whether that deer can come in on the day you call.

Capacity is not confirmed, so a busy week is a reason to call before you leave the Prospect Hill Street lot. Cut sheets, sausage, jerky, skin-only work, quartered acceptance, caping, and other species are not confirmed either. Taxidermy is a separate business. Ask about a cape before you open the neck on a Zone 11 buck. Ask about sausage from an Assonet doe before you promise the meat at camp. The answer has to come from a trusted processing shop in the region on the call.

Report first, then talk about cuts

Report within 48 hours through MassFishHunt or a check station. Write the confirmation number on the harvest tag. Until that report is done, the deer stays intact except for field dressing. Quartering in the swamp, or on the bank of the Taunton River, so the carcass fits a smaller cooler is the wrong order in archery. Field dress, tag, report, write the number, then call.

The 2026 transport-visibility rule was removed. The tag stays, and the confirmation number goes on that tag once you have it. Deer-derived scents are banned, which bow hunters notice because scent control is part of the setup. Leave those bottles at home. Un-deboned deer-family carcasses from outside New England are barred, so a deer from beyond that region is not a Taunton processing conversation. Chronic wasting disease has not been found in Massachusetts. Wear gloves and keep blades off brain, spinal, and lymph tissue while you work in the woods.

Warm starts, colder finishes, donation clocks

The first half of October around Taunton can stay warm after the season opens. A deer field dressed at mid-morning in Hockomock Swamp WMA or along the river should be cooled once the drag is finished. Hunters Share the Harvest uses a standard worth knowing if you might donate: field dress within four hours unless the air stays under 37°F, then get a whole deer to a donation processor within 24 hours, legally reported and tagged. Hunters must use the official program map. This referral does not claim a trusted processing shop in the region is on that map. On a qualifying whole donation the hunter pays no processing fee. Meat you keep is a different call, and the processor sets the price.

A replacement antlerless permit for zones including Zone 11 usually takes two to four weeks. When the whole deer is donated before Thanksgiving, the program tries to issue that permit before shotgun. After Thanksgiving the replacement is for the next year. Archery runs through November 28, and shotgun week one opens Monday, November 30, so a deer taken earlier in archery is the one with a chance to become a permit you can hold before the gun weeks. Some processors decline partial donations. A deer already split into packages is a question for the official map, not an assumption.

Order of work on an archery Saturday

Say Raynham, Berkley, Dighton, Freetown, Assonet, or Somerset if that is where you were, and say whether you came out through the five-vehicle dirt lot, Route 138, Route 24, or Route 140. During archery the report can be MassFishHunt or a check station. Shotgun week one is a later rule: from November 30 through December 5 every deer needs an in-person check station, and this site does not list station streets. Use the official check-station map when that week arrives. For these bow weeks, a trusted processing shop in the region should see a deer that is already legal to move. Zones 9, 10, and 11 have a winter season from January 1 through January 30, 2027, which needs a 2027 license on sale December 1, 2026. That winter date is a footnote. The archery job is the tagged deer and the call before you drive.
